An In Depth Look at Occupational Therapy

Updated: Apr 24, 2023

Occupational Therapy (OT) is an evidence-based practice, deeply rooted in science, that uses the engagement in occupations to promote health and well-being. In the simplest terms, occupations are what you do. Occupations may look different for each person. Some common occupations include play/leisure, work, exercise, sleep, and hygiene. More specifically occupations include brushing your teeth, playing football, ordering take out, and so much more! Occupational Therapists may work in a variety of settings including daycares, schools, hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and client's homes. We work with individuals who are living with an acute injury, cognitive or behavioral disorder, or chronic illnesses to promote engagement in occupation and improve functional independence.

There is so much more to the profession of OT than the normal eye sees. OT interventions vary by setting-- let's talk within the field of geriatric OT. Some common OT treatments with the elderly population include:

- Performing home management tasks safely with use of energy conservation techniques

- Meal preparation, grocery shopping, and meal delivery

- Ordering durable medical equipment (DME) such as shower chair, grab bars, etc.

- Providing adaptive equipment (AE) such as long handled reacher, dressing stick, etc.

- Medication management strategies to promote well-being

- Community mobility and social participation i.e. attending church, volunteer groups, etc.

Furthermore, OTs understand the devastating impacts of illness or injury and how they can impact the many roles of your life. Our goal is to identify the abilities and deficits of our clients, explore meaningful occupations and activities, and utilize evidence based and client-centered interventions to improve functional independence and quality of life.

Occupational therapy is a unique profession, in that we analyze client factors, performance skills, and environments to understand how our clients are affected by various conditions. We create a plan of care (POC) that addresses the client's goals and promotes occupational performance.

VIP Therapy, LLC is specifically designed to help the elderly population age in place. Research has proven that the goal of most elderly individuals is to remain living in their home for as long as possible. Our role at VIP Therapy is to offer information, services, and guidance to help you or your loved age in place.

Thank you for all of the love and support!
